Getting around Virtastic 95

--- title: "Getting around Virtastic 95" description: "How the Virtastic desktop works: icons, windows, the Start menu, the taskbar, and running the apps." book: "Using Virtastic 95" order: 10 --- Virtastic 95 is our website, dressed as a desktop. Every page opens as a window, and the apps we maintain run as programs on it. Nothing is installed on your computer.

## Desktop icons

Click an icon once to select it, and double-click it (or press Enter) to open it. The arrow keys move the selection, and right-clicking an icon shows its menu, including Properties. Press F1 anywhere to open this page. - **Apps** lists every app we maintain. **Documents** holds the manuals, help and legal pages. **Blog** holds our posts and white papers, and **News** every release and software update. - **About Us** says who we are, **Get Involved** how to help build the apps, and **Contact Us** how to reach us. **Donate** supports the work. - **GitHub**, **Reddit** and **Discord** open our community pages in a new tab. - The app icons start the apps. An app that is coming soon says so, and offers to e-mail you when it launches.

## The Start menu

Click **Start** in the bottom-left corner: - **Programs**: every released app, and **All Apps**. - **Documents**: the documents you opened recently, then **Read Latest** (our newest post), the [Blog](/blog/), [News](/news/) and [All Documents](/docs/). - **Help** (this page), **About Us**, **Get Involved** and **Contact Us**. - **Get Updates...**: an e-mail when we launch something new. - **Donate...**: Patreon and Ko-fi, if the apps are useful to you.

## Windows

- Drag a window by its title bar. Drag the bottom-right corner to resize it. - The three buttons at the top right minimize, maximize and close it. Double-clicking the title bar also maximizes, and double-clicking the small icon at its left closes the window. - Every open window has a button on the taskbar. Click it to bring the window to the front, or click it again to minimize it. Links you share still work: every window has its own address, and opening one in a new browser tab shows that window on its own.

## Running the apps

Opening an app shows its box: **Play** starts it, **Website** shows its page, **Manual** opens its documentation and **GitHub** its source code. Most apps run inside a Virtastic Navigator window on the desktop. Morrowind and Jagged Alliance 2 open in a tab of their own, because they ask you to choose the folder that holds your game files, and browsers only allow that outside a window like this one. Either way the app runs on your own computer, in your browser. The apps need a desktop Chromium browser: Chrome, Edge or Brave. One app runs at a time. Closing its window stops it, so save your work first.

## On a phone

The desktop icons are your home screen: tap one to open it. Each window opens full screen, and the taskbar switches between them. The apps play on a computer, so on a phone an app's window offers **Share Link** to send it to one.
